Honoring Ettore Sottsass, Jr.

IDNF's "Evening in Soho," the third in the 1996 series of special programs, was held November 12 and was a smashing success. Tucker Viemeister and his colleagues at Smart Design Studio welcomed over one hundred IDNF members and friends to their cavernous studio space. The scene was an interesting mix of uptown, downtown and Brooklyn as IDNF honored Ettore Sottsass, Jr. and Lisa Krohn, recipients of the Brooklyn Museum's Lifetime Achievement and Young Designer Awards, respectively. Sottsass's work spans many design disciplines, including architecture, ceramics, jewelry, interior design, furniture, and graphics. He has taught and exhibited around the world, and his name is synonymous with the Memphis movement. He spoke eloquently and at length about post-war Italy and the world at large as they relate to design. Lisa Krohn, a former Smart Design employee and now a celebrated designer in her own right, heads up Krohn Design in Los Angeles.
