| 2003 IDNF Event Overview
February 2-6: Gifu Craft-Handmade Exhibition
The fine products designed by the designers from
the Gifu Artists in Residence program and manufactured in Gifu, Japan were
presented at the Gifu Craft booth in the Handmade Division of the New York
International Gift Fair at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The products
included beautiful paper napkins designed by Liza Niles and Sami Ruotsalainen,
tableware designed by Camilla Groth and Miguel Calvo, paper lamps designed
by Gaston Marticorena and many more. The booth itself was designed and
tended by Miguel Calvo. The Gifu Craft booth brought a lot of interest
in the well designed and well crafted products.
April 15: Spring*Fling-IDNF/Calty Party
IDNF board, members, family and friends gathered
for a spring networking party sponsored by Calty-division of Toyota. Everyone
celebrated the new season.
May 23: Jan Ken Pon-Jury
IDNF President Tucker Viemeister and Board Member
Eric Chan visited Gifu City, Japan for the 2nd Gifu World Design CompetitionÕs
jury. Out of the 400 entries from 39 countries, the judges took three hours
to choose the winners for the competition. Other judges present were Fumi
Kimura, President of EDUCE, Hideki Nishiyama, Chairman of Oribe Design
Center, Katsuhiko Hasegawa, President of Hasegawa Hamono, and Koji Oshika,
Chairman of Gifu CreatorsÕ Association. The $10,000 Grand Priz was awarded
to Simon Lloyd from Australia for his ÒFelt DishÓ.
Gifu AIR (Artist/Designer Residency Program)
Another successful year for this great program!
January-March: SYLVIA NAGY
The fourth designer to attend the program from
IDNF. This Hungarian born ceramic artist and designer with her own studio
in New York is known for her organic and stylish designs. During her residency,
Sylvia designed a 10-piece set tableware, "River," for Talk Ltd one of
the prominent ceramic manufacturers of Tajimi City, Gifu. In February,
her work received positive reactions when she exhibited her ceramic work
at the Tokyo Gift Show.
March: RHEA ALEXANDER
Rhea who is president and design director for
successful product design company, D.I.G.S., worked with a cutlery manufacturer
and paper manufacturer during her stay in Gifu.
November-December: IRINA DAVIDOVICH
A designer and instructor who specializes in
hand-made ceramics. IrinaÕs work was also exhibited in Gifu in New York
10 Designers. During her residency, she worked with a tableware import/export
company and a porcelain manufacturer. She designed a teapot and cups for
the American market and a set of dishes for the domestic market.
